“Drink, drink, drink,” Brandon chanted when the waitress brought a third round of drinks for everyone at the table. Ryan accepted his gladly and downed half of it in one go. He hoped Kerri understood he’d rather be with her, but he appreciated the fact that his friends wanted to celebrate what they saw as his good fortune, even if he wasn’t sure how he felt about the job in California—or if he would even be offered it.

“I’m going to find me a partner and get on that dance floor,” Jacob announced. He nudged Kyle off the end of the bench seat and got out of the booth, heading off without looking back.

“Me, too. Lots of women here tonight,” Kyle said.

“Kerri’s all by herself,” Brandon told Ryan. “Better grab her up before someone else does.”

“Sounds like a good idea.” But as he moved to stand, he noticed Russell Taylor heading in her direction with a purposeful look on his face. Russell had been a pain in the ass on the football team in high school who always showed up late for practice but always wanted to be first on the field on game day.

Ryan found himself on his feet and across the floor before he knew what he was doing.

“Let’s dance,” he said, taking Kerri’s hand and tugging her toward the dance floor.

“Hey,” Russell said, cutting them off. “I was just about to ask Kerri to dance.”

“You’re late. As usual,” Ryan said, keeping going.

“What the hell is that supposed to mean?”

Ryan didn’t give him another look. He led Kerri in between the other couples, leaving Russell sputtering behind them, took her in his arms and began to sway to the music. When he caught her raised eyebrow, he knew she wanted an explanation.

“Old enemy,” he said. “Hope you don’t mind dancing with me instead of Russell.”

“I thought you’d never ask.”

He tugged her closer, and she threaded her hands around his neck. As they swayed together, Ryan fought an urge to bury his face in her hair. Holding her reminded him of being with her this afternoon. He’d memorized every expression that had crossed her face when he’d moved inside her.

Couldn’t wait to do it again.

“See? What did I tell you? You and Kerri are a thing,” Jacob shouted, passing by them with Kelly Scheer in his arms. Kelly waved at them over Jacob’s shoulder.

Ryan stiffened, but Kerri laughed. “The whole town is going to know about us now.”

“Do you mind?”

“No. It’s inevitable when you date in Chance Creek.” She swayed with him a moment. “Sunshine and Cole tried to lend me money to pay my mom.”

He could guess how that had gone. “They care about you.”

“Looks like your friends care about you, too. Do they think you’re taking the Sacramento job?” She nodded toward the booth where some of the firemen were still hanging out.

“I told them I haven’t even gone for the interview yet. Jacob insisted on celebrating anyway. Any excuse to spend the night at the Boot.” He realized Kerri was one of the few people in his life who took the time to listen to him.
